In Drydens The Preface to Fables old-fashi whizd and Modern, he draws a comparison amidst Chaucers flow and endowment fund and that of several ancient and more well-known Hellenic and Roman writers. He makes it explicitly clear that he greatly respects Chaucer to the same degree that he respects the classical Homer and the Roman Virgil.
