Segregation of African the Statesns
African Americans were constrained into the United States against their will and struggled to conform to a society that would non accept them. African Americans first had to become Americans in redact to be a part of American society. Claude S. Fischer claims in his work, make In America, that the central theme of American refinement is voluntarism, which he defines as: believing and behaving as if each person is a sovereign individual: unique, independent, self-reliant, self-governing, and ultimately self-responsible (Fischer 10). Fischer adds, voluntarism is believing and behaving as if individuals practise through fellowship-not in egoistic isolation but in sustaining, voluntary communities (Fischer 10). Fischer goes on to claim that within a voluntaristic culture each person is free to join or go away the group without fear of discrimination. Authors like James Baldwin complicate Fischers claim. Baldwin uses his short stories in his collection Going to Meet the Man, to deck characters that struggle during the 1940s to 1960s to find their place in American society, and how they suffered along the way. Baldwin challenges Fischers claims by arguing the nonethelesst of social madness of African Americans.

Fischer argues that social groups in America are an example of free choice that Americans determine: Americans have an unusually free choice of groups, churches, neighborhoods, clubs, and even families (Fischer 98). Fischer claims that American social groups have an unspoken rule that members have a free will to both join and leave groups whenever they desire....If you indispensability to get a full essay, order it on our website: Ordercustompaper.com
